Joseph E. Cangas, M.D.
Dr. Cangas is an Illinois native. He was born in Ft. Madison, IA
in 1970. Most of his childhood was spent in a small town in
western Illinois, Dallas City, which has a population of 1,000.
He graduated from Dallas City High School in 1988, with a
graduating class of 34 students.
His mother, Jo Ann Flaherty, owns a clothing consignment
shop, Stage 2, in Ft. Madison, IA, which she has run since
1985. Dan Flaherty, his father, works in marine construction.
He has two siblings, as well, a brother, Karl Flaherty, who is
14, and a sister, Misty Flaherty, who is 26.
After graduating high school, Joseph joined the U.S Army and
worked in Counterintelligence and was instructed in the
Korean language at the Defense Language Institute in
Monterey, CA. After discharge, he returned to the Dallas City
area, where he worked for DuPont for a year prior to returning
to college.
In 1993, Dr. Cangas began college, obtaining his B.S. from
Western Illinois University in 1997. He subsequently attended
the University of Illinois College of Medicine, after which he
attended the University of Missouri for his pediatric training.
He completed that training in 2004.
Dr. Cangas recently moved to Columbia, IL, after two years of
