Joseph E. Cangas, M.D.
Thanks for checking out my website! I'm a Board Certified
Pediatrician and an Illinois native. While I was born in Ft.
Madison, IA in 1970, most of my childhood was spent in a
small town in western Illinois, Dallas City, which has a
population of 1,000. I graduated from Dallas City High School
in 1988, with a graduating class of 34 students. I married my
wife Natasha in August 2008. We have two children, Jonathan
4, and Ashley 7.
My mother, JoAnn Flaherty, owns a clothing consignment
shop, Stage 2, in Ft. Madison, IA, which she has run since
1985. Dan Flaherty, my father, works in marine construction. I
also have two siblings, a brother, Karl, who is 17, and a sister,
Misty, who is 29.
After graduating high school, I joined the U.S Army and worked
in Counterintelligence and was instructed in the Korean
language at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA.
After discharge, I returned to the Dallas City area, where I
worked for DuPont for a year prior to returning to college.
In 1993, I began college, obtaining my B.S. from Western
Illinois University in 1997. I subsequently attended the
University of Illinois College of Medicine, after which I attended
the University of Missouri for my pediatric training, which I
completed in 2004.
I moved to Columbia, IL, and started Illini Pediatrics in 2006
after two years of service in Salem, IL. Check out the website
for the helmet program I started, Helmets First!
